What we collect, and why.
Last updated July 13, 2026
Reclaim the Career Center is a community campaign to remediate the soil, return the building, and reopen the Brothers & Sisters BarberCosmo Career Center in East Oakland. This page explains, in plain language, what this website collects when you sign the demand or share a story, and what we do with it. We collect only what we need — nothing more.
What we collect
Demand signatures. Your first name, last name, email address, ZIP code, and — if you check the boxes — whether you live in East Oakland and whether you consent to display your first name and last initial publicly on the supporter wall.
Story submissions. If you use the private story form, we collect anything you provide: name, contact, relationship to the career center, and the text of your story.
Abuse prevention. On every submission we also store a one-way hashed value derived from your IP address (we never store the raw IP), and your browser’s user-agent string. We use these only to slow down spam and duplicate submissions.
Why we collect it
- To deliver the petition to elected officials with real names, real ZIPs, and verifiable email addresses.
- To verify each signature by email so the count we present is defensible.
- To prevent bots, mass signups, and duplicate submissions.
- To show your first name and last initial on the supporter wall — only if you explicitly opt in.
- To follow up on private stories with the campaign team, if you choose to share one.
Email verification
When you sign the petition we send a one-time verification link to your email address. Only verified signatures are counted publicly or included in the deliverable we present to officials.Unverified entries stay in a hold state and are not part of the visible total.
Who sees your information
Your information is seen by the campaign team only. Story submissions are treated as confidential and are never displayed on the website. We do not sell, rent, or trade any of the data you share with us. We do not share your email with third parties for marketing.
The one exception is the public supporter wall: it shows only your first name and the first letter of your last name, and only if you checked the display-publicly box when you signed. Your email, ZIP, and full last name are never shown publicly.
How long we keep it
We keep signature and story records for the duration of the campaign and for a reasonable period afterward to document what was delivered to officials. You can ask us to remove your information at any time (see below).
Removing or accessing your information
To request that your signature or story be removed, or to see what information we have about you, email save@oaklandctd.org from the email address you used to sign. We honor deletion requests. Please allow a few business days.
Cookies and analytics
This site does not use advertising trackers, third-party analytics profiles, or cross-site cookies. Your browser stores only what is needed for the campaign website itself to function. We do not build advertising audiences from visitors.
Security
Data is stored in our campaign backend with row-level security rules that prevent anyone outside the campaign team from reading signature emails, ZIPs, or story text. Submissions are validated server-side and rate-limited to prevent abuse.
Kids under 13
This petition is intended for adults. If we learn that a signature was submitted by a child under 13, we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change how we handle information, we will update this page and revise the “Last updated” date at the top. Ongoing use of the site after that constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
